Your child’s oral health begins with you!oral hygiene

The minute your child is born you have so much to think about. Of course, it’s a given that you want your child to grow up healthy and strong. Our Midland Park, NJ, family dentist Dr. Carrie Polster provides some tips on how to keep your little one’s smile healthy.

Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Knowing when your child should start visiting our Midland Park, NJ, dentist for routine cleanings is important. These checkups are often the only way to detect minor issues before they become serious problems. Establishing rapport with our family dentist as soon as possible will go a long way to promoting good oral health for the long term.

Other Ways to Promote a Healthy Smile

For the first six or seven years of your child’s life you will want to brush and floss their teeth for them until they are able to do so on their own. The amount of toothpaste you use will vary depending on your child’s age. This is also something we can discuss during your child’s first visit.

Another way to promote a cavity-free smile is to make sure your child has a healthy diet. Sure, the occasional sweet treat won’t hurt them but it’s important that they are eating a diet that has variety and balance. Moderation is key when it comes to foods that contain sugar, starches or bad fats (E.g. junk foods or desserts). If your child eats a diet rich in vegetables, whole grains, proteins, low-fat dairy products and fruits, this can go a long way to staving off gum disease and decay.

Also make sure your child is drinking enough water throughout the day, particularly if they are physical active. Water is a great way to wash food and debris from teeth particularly because it promotes salivary production, which is also important for neutralizing acid within the mouth to reduce enamel erosion.

We know that new parents will have questions along the way when it comes to caring for their child’s smile. Don’t hesitate to call our Midland Park, NJ, family dental office to schedule your child’s first visit or to turn to us for advice.
